History
The history of Tropicana Cookies
Tropicana Cookies began with Harry Palms of Bloom Seed Co, who crossed GSC with Tangie. Oni Seed Co of Colorado, a company he co-founded, made a second generation, an entry under the name won best sativa at a Barcelona cup in 2019, and its cross Super Boof became Leafly’s 2024 Strain of the Year.1,2,3,4,5

Why it spread
Flavor and color did much of the work. Leafly’s editors describe a strain that “crosses sweet cookies and orange flavors for focused energy”, with deep purple buds and orange hairs that “smell great when you crack the bag”.14 Breeders took it up: SeedFinder lists 63 direct descendants of Bloom Seed Co’s original and 135 of Oni Seed Co’s version, among them Blockberry, which became Super Boof, and Relentless Genetics’ Tropicana Cherry.5,10,16 Seed companies also sell feminized and autoflowering versions under the name.12,17
Michigan in particular took to it: 52.2% of the tests in our lab records come from there, and it was a Michigan grower, Mobilejay, who selected and popularized its cross Super Boof in 2021 and 2022.5,8
The disputed parts of the story
- Which GSC: the Forum Cut (Weedmaps; MFNY, a New York cultivator) or, “probably”, Thin Mint GSC (SeedFinder’s family tree); see genetics.9,16,18
- Bloom or Oni: Leafly calls the second generation “also acclaimed”, and SeedFinder records crosses made from each version, so the same name covers both.1,10,19
- Sativa or hybrid: Leafly files it as a sativa while its own description calls it a hybrid; Weedmaps calls it a hybrid and AllBud a 70% sativa hybrid.1,9,20
- When: no source we found gives the year of the original cross; the earliest dated record we have is a Washington lab test from Aug 2018.8
- MTN Trop: Leafly and SeedFinder list it as another name for the strain, and Bloom Seed Co’s own Grape MTN names MTN Trop as a parent, but no source we found explains the name.1,16,19
