Is Tropicana Cookies indica or sativa? Its genetics and family tree

The two parents

GSC, also called Girl Scout Cookies, is the indica-dominant parent. Leafly credits it to the California breeder Jigga, who crossed a sub-type of OG Kush with F1 Durban, and its history of the Cookies family places the strain in San Francisco in the late 2000s. Leafly users’ top effects for GSC are relaxed, hungry and happy, and its top flavors mint, sweet and earthy.^13,14

Tangie is the sativa parent. Leafly describes it as a California Orange × Skunk-1 sativa, “a remake of sorts” of the Tangerine Dream that was sought after in the 1990s, gives its top effects as energetic, focused and uplifted and its top flavors as orange, citrus and apricot, and lists Tropicana Cookies among its children; SeedFinder’s family tree gives the Tangie parent as DNA Genetics’.^6,7 Plantation Premium Seeds credits Tangie with the citrus character of Tropicana Cookies.¹⁵

Bloom Seed Co’s original and Oni Seed Co’s F2

Leafly says Harry Palms of Bloom Seed Co bred Tropicana Cookies first and that Oni Seed Co of Colorado made a second generation, Tropicanna Cookies F2, “that is also acclaimed”; Weedmaps says Oni Seed Co “pushed the genetics forward” with it.^1,5 Oni is Palms’ company too: SeedFinder names its founders as Harrrypalms and Oninoodles, and records Oni’s Tropicanna Cookies as a second generation of Bloom Seed Co’s strain.^3,4,9

SeedFinder says neither version was released as feminized seed.^3,6 Several later lines name Oni Seed Co’s version as their parent: Blockberry, the plant that became Super Boof, Relentless Genetics’ Tropicana Cherry and FastBuds’ Tropicana Cookies Auto among them.^9,17

How sativa is it?

Most sources lean sativa without agreeing on a number. Leafly files it as a sativa, although its own description calls it a hybrid; AllBud gives 70% sativa and 30% indica; SeedFinder calls both Bloom Seed Co’s and Oni Seed Co’s versions mostly sativa; Zamnesia and Plantation Premium Seeds list their feminized seeds as 60% sativa; and Weedmaps simply calls it a hybrid.^{1,2,3,5,6,15,18} FastBuds’ autoflowering version goes the other way, at 60% indica.¹⁷

Seed versions, crosses sold under the name and two phenotypes

Feminized seeds sold simply as Tropicana Cookies come from other companies: Zamnesia and Plantation Premium Seeds describe theirs as Girl Scout Cookies × Tangie, and Atlas Seed sells one from what it calls the Multiverse Beans Preservation Line.^15,18,19 Some products that carry the name are crosses: Royal Queen Seeds’ Tropicana Cookies Purple is Purple Punch × Tropicanna Cookies, Dutch Passion’s Red Tropicana Cookies comes from a Sour Tropicana Cookies selection, and FastBuds’ autoflower adds Strawberry Banana Auto F5.^12,17,20

Within the strain itself, Weedmaps describes two phenotypes, one with purple flowers and one green. Leafly describes purple buds with hints of dark green and orange hairs, and AllBud minty green buds with dark purple undertones.^1,2,5

What our lab data adds

Our strict matching counts “Tropicana Cookies”, “Tropicanna Cookies” and “Trop Cookies” as the same strain.²¹ In state lab records, 125 of the 347 tests on this site were labelled with the double-n spelling “Tropicanna Cookies” and 18 “Trop Cookies”.²¹ It excluded another 82 results, 43 of them flower, sold under near-miss names, led by “Tropicana Cookies x Cherry Cookies” (33), the pairing Leafly gives for Tropicana Cherry; others include crosses such as “Trop Cookies x Okie” and named variants such as “Black Cherry Tropicana Cookies Bud”.^11,21
